As important as having urgent plumbing work done on time is finding the right plumber. Experience, qualifications, and specialities should all be given consideration. Failing to do so may lead to unforeseen circumstances and consequences such as the problem which initially required a plumber not being adequately fixed, further damage being done to your water and gas systems, and warrantees being invalidated. At a most basic level, it is very important that your plumber is either properly qualified, or an apprentice working under supervision. A good starting point for qualifications is a Level 2 National Vocational Qualification. This is equivalent to A-Level standard, and qualifies a plumber to undertake most types of work in a domestic setting. This is the most basic qualification British plumbers tend to hold, but many will also hold a Level 3 NVQ.
Some plumbers are also members of The Chartered Institute of Plumbing and Heating Engineering. Membership is only granted if evidence of core competencies can be provided, meaning that this can be a highly effective benchmark of professionalism. Institute members are often kept fully abreast of latest industry developments, and can provide the level of expertise you are looking for. However, many competent plumbers do not go on to join CIPHE or other similar professional organisations. Not doing so does not automatically detract from their level of skill, and this is only one factor to consider.
