How Thermal Imaging Leak Detection Works

Thermal imaging works because water and wet materials behave differently from dry materials when it comes to heat. Wet areas absorb heat more slowly and release it more slowly than dry areas of the same material. This difference in thermal mass creates a temperature gradient at the surface that an infrared camera can detect, even when the surface looks completely normal to the eye.

Our engineers scan the affected area systematically with the infrared camera, looking for anomalies in the surface temperature pattern. A cold patch in a wall that should be uniform in temperature tells us moisture is present. The shape and extent of the cold area tells us how far it has spread. The gradient from coolest to warmest within the anomaly points us toward the source.
