Gas leaks are rare but serious. Natural gas is not toxic in the way carbon monoxide is, but it is highly flammable. Any ignition source, including a light switch, a doorbell, a spark from an electrical socket or a naked flame, can ignite accumulated gas. The steps below must be followed in order.

  • Get out or move away from the area where the smell is strongest
  • Do not touch any electrical switches, sockets, doorbells or alarms
  • Do not use naked flames of any kind
  • Open doors and windows to ventilate the property if you can do so without using any switches
  • Turn off the gas at the meter if you can reach it safely - the meter is usually under the stairs, in a kitchen cupboard or in an external meter box
  • Leave the building
  • Call 0800 111 999 from outside - the National Gas Emergency Service will attend to make the property safe

Carbon monoxide warning

Gas tightness testing

The first step on every gas investigation is a tightness test at the meter. This is a legal requirement under Gas Safe standards and must be completed before any appliances are operated or further investigation begins. The meter is isolated and monitored for a drop in pressure. A pressure drop confirms that gas is escaping somewhere in the internal pipework or appliance connections and tells us the scale of the loss before we start tracing.

Pipe Trace Investigation

Appliance Safety Testing

Gas leaks frequently originate at appliance connections rather than in the pipework itself. Boiler flue connections, cooker isolation valves, gas fire supply points and warm air unit connections are all common failure locations, particularly in older London properties where appliances have been replaced multiple times and the original connections have been remade with varying quality.

Repair and Replacement

Once the source is confirmed, we carry out the repair. The nature of the repair depends on what we find. A failed joint is remade using the appropriate method for the pipe material. A corroded or damaged pipe section is cut out and replaced. A faulty isolation valve is replaced with a correctly rated component. A loose appliance connection is reseated and tested.

For Landlords

UK law requires landlords to have gas appliances and flues in rented properties checked annually by a Gas Safe registered engineer. The resulting Landlord Gas Safety Record must be provided to existing tenants within 28 days of the check being carried out, and to new tenants before they move in.

If a gas leak is discovered at a property you own, the repair must be carried out by a Gas Safe registered engineer. A gas tightness test and Gas Safety Certificate are required after the repair before the property can be occupied or the gas supply restored.
