For a minor outside blockage it is worth trying a few things before you call. Lift the drain cover and clear any visible debris, leaves, silt or build-up around the gully by hand while wearing gloves. A pair of drain rods pushed along the run can shift a blockage a little further down. A garden hose or a bucket of hot water can flush the loosened debris through.
What we would not recommend is chemical drain cleaner, which rarely clears a full blockage, damages pipework over time, and is hazardous where the drain overflows into a garden. If the drain is still overflowing, if the chamber or manhole is backing up, or if more than one outside drain is affected, the blockage is deeper in the main run and needs professional clearing. That is the point to call us rather than keep working at it from the surface.
