Before you call, a blocked toilet is often something you can clear yourself. Here is how to do it safely, and when to stop and call a professional.

If the bowl is already full or close to the rim, do not flush again, it will overflow. Wait for the water level to drop, which it usually does as the blockage slowly lets water past. Put on rubber gloves and lay down old towels or newspaper around the base in case of splashes.

A flanged toilet plunger, the kind with an extended rubber lip, is the right tool, not a flat sink plunger. Fit it over the outlet at the bottom of the bowl so it seals, then push and pull firmly a dozen times. The suction and pressure shift most simple blockages. Keep enough water in the bowl to cover the plunger head.

Where the blockage is further down the system and needs jetting, a CCTV survey or a repair, the engineer explains what has been found and agrees the cost with you on site before going ahead.
