A blocked sink is one of the most disruptive everyday plumbing problems, especially a kitchen sink you cannot use to cook or wash up. Kitchen sinks block when fat and grease cool and harden in the waste pipe and trap food waste behind them. Bathroom sinks block with hair and soap. Either way, a bottle of chemical drain cleaner poured down tends to sit on top of the blockage, damaging the pipework without clearing it.
That is how we approach it. Our engineers clear the trap and waste pipe mechanically, removing the blockage at source, and flush the run so the sink drains freely again. This service is part of our full drainage service across London, and a blocked sink is usually a straightforward same day job.

Remove any visible debris from the plughole and fill the sink with a few inches of water. Fit a cup plunger over the plughole so it seals, and push and pull firmly a dozen times. For a double sink, block the other plughole with a wet cloth so the pressure works on the blockage rather than escaping.

For a grease blockage in a kitchen sink (not a bathroom sink with a plastic waste), pour a kettle of boiling water down the drain in stages to melt and flush the fat away. Do not use boiling water if the sink has a plastic waste pipe or trap, use hot water instead.

Pour a cup of baking soda down the drain followed by a cup of white vinegar, leave it to fizz for ten minutes, then flush with hot water. It breaks down grease and build-up without the pipework damage chemical drain cleaners cause.

The U-bend (trap) under the sink is where blockages most often sit. Put a bucket underneath, unscrew the trap by hand, clear out the gunk and food or hair caught inside, and refit it. This clears the majority of sink blockages directly.

If the sink is still blocked after plunging and clearing the trap, if the water backs up, or if more than one fixture is affected, the blockage is further down the waste pipe or main drain and needs professional clearing. Avoid chemical drain cleaners, which damage pipework and rarely clear a full blockage.

We would not recommend it. Chemical drain cleaners often sit on top of a blockage without clearing it, and they damage pipework and seals over time. Clearing the trap and waste pipe mechanically is more effective and does not harm the plumbing.
