0800 Homefix clears blocked and slow-draining showers across London and the South East. Shower drains block mostly with hair, soap and product build-up in the trap and waste pipe, and our engineers clear the blockage at source without harsh chemicals, then check the shower is draining freely before they leave. Same-day service is standard. There is no call-out fee, so you pay for the work, not the journey.

WHY US
A shower that drains slowly, leaving you standing in a pool of water, is one of the most common bathroom blockages there is. It is almost always hair and soap scum binding together in the trap and waste pipe. It is rarely an emergency, but it gets steadily worse until the water barely drains at all, and reaching for a bottle of chemical drain cleaner tends to damage the pipework without fully clearing it.
That is how we approach it. Our engineers clear the trap and the waste pipe mechanically, removing the hair and build-up at source rather than pouring chemicals over it. This service is part of our full drainage service across London, and a slow or blocked shower is usually a straightforward same-day job
How to
A slow shower is often something you can clear yourself before calling. Here is how, and when to stop.
01
Most shower blockages sit just below the plughole. Unscrew or lift the drain cover, put on gloves, and pull out the hair and gunk you can see and reach. A bent piece of wire or a plastic drain-cleaning tool (the flexible barbed strip) is ideal for hooking out what your fingers cannot.
02
Once you have cleared the visible hair, pour a kettle of hot (not boiling) water mixed with washing-up liquid down the drain to break down the remaining soap scum. Boiling water can damage some shower traps and seals, so keep it hot rather than boiling.
03
For lingering soap build-up, pour a cup of baking soda followed by a cup of white vinegar down the drain, leave it to fizz for ten minutes, then flush with hot water. It helps break down grease and soap without the damage chemical drain cleaner causes.
04
A small cup plunger over the plughole can shift a blockage a little further down. A drain snake or flexible rod reaches deeper into the waste pipe where hair collects at the trap.
05
If the shower is still slow after clearing the hair and flushing, if the water backs up, or if a nearby sink or bath is also draining slowly, the blockage is further down the shared waste pipe and needs professional clearing. Avoid chemical drain cleaners, which damage pipework and seals and rarely clear a hair blockage anyway.
Process
Step 1
Call or book online and describe whether the shower is slow or fully blocked, and whether any nearby fixtures are affected too.
Step 2
Same day service is standard, so in most cases the engineer is with you the day you call.
Step 3
The engineer establishes whether the blockage is in the trap, the waste pipe, or further down a shared run. Where a shower keeps blocking, a CCTV survey shows what is happening underground.
Step 4
Using professional equipment, the engineer clears the hair and build-up from the trap and waste pipe at source. We do not use harsh chemicals that damage pipework.
Step 5
Step 6
Every repair is backed by our 12-month labour guarantee. If a fault we fixed recurs within that period, we return at no extra cost.
0800 Homefix does not charge a call-out fee to unblock a shower drain. You pay for the engineer’s labour from the moment work begins, starting with the first hour, so your money goes toward clearing the shower rather than the visit itself. Where the blockage is cleared within the first hour and no further work is needed, there is nothing more to pay.
Where the blockage is further down the system and needs jetting, a CCTV survey or a repair, the engineer explains what has been found and agrees the cost with you on site before going ahead. A small uplift applies to evenings, weekends and bank holidays, stated when you call and confirmed before the engineer travels. Full rates are published on our rates page.
FAQ
Some questions homeowners, landlords and tenants typically ask before booking one of our plumbers in London.
Start by removing the drain cover and pulling out the visible hair, which is the cause of most shower blockages. Flush with hot (not boiling) water and washing-up liquid, or baking soda and vinegar, to break down soap scum. A drain snake reaches hair collected further down at the trap. If it stays slow, the blockage is deeper in the waste pipe and needs professional clearing. Avoid chemical drain cleaners, which damage pipework.
A slow shower is almost always hair binding with soap scum in the trap and waste pipe just below the plughole. Over time this builds until the water barely drains. Clearing the visible hair and flushing with hot water often fixes it. Where it keeps returning, the build-up is further down the pipe and worth clearing properly.
We would not recommend it. Chemical drain cleaners rarely clear a hair blockage, which is what most shower blockages are, and they damage pipework and rubber seals over time. Clearing the hair mechanically from the trap and waste pipe is more effective and does not harm the plumbing.
Showers block repeatedly because hair keeps collecting at the same point in the trap or waste pipe. A thorough clearance at source removes the build-up properly rather than punching a channel through it. A drain hair catcher over the plughole helps prevent it returning. Where the problem is further down a shared waste run, a CCTV survey confirms the cause.
Same-day service is standard for a blocked shower, so in most cases an engineer is with you the day you call. A slow shower is rarely an emergency, but if it is backing up along with other fixtures, that points to a larger blockage we would prioritise.
No. There is no call-out fee, so you pay for the work, not the journey. You pay for the engineer’s labour from arrival, starting with the first hour. If the shower is cleared within that hour with no further work needed, there is nothing more to pay.
