The pattern is worth noting. Anything to the left of the boiler, the meter, the supply lever, the condensate pipe, is usually something a homeowner can check safely. Anything inside the boiler, the electrodes, valve, flame probe and gas pressure, is engineer territory and should not be opened up by anyone who is not Gas Safe registered.
How Do You Fix a Vaillant F28 Error?
Before calling anyone, there are a few safe checks that clear a good proportion of F28 faults. Work through them in order.
First, check your gas supply generally. Try another gas appliance, such as a hob. If nothing gas-powered is working, the problem is the supply rather than the boiler, and you should contact your gas supplier. Check the meter is not in emergency credit or showing a fault, and that the gas isolation lever under the boiler is fully open, meaning the handle sits in line with the pipe rather than across it.
Second, in cold weather, check the condensate pipe. This is the white plastic pipe running from the boiler to an outside drain. If it has frozen, the boiler cannot drain and will lock out. Pour warm water over the frozen section, or hold a covered hot water bottle against it, until the flow returns. Never use boiling water, as it can crack the pipe.
Third, reset the boiler once. Hold the reset button on the control panel until the boiler attempts to re-fire. If it lights and stays lit, the fault has cleared. If F28 returns, do not keep resetting. Repeatedly resetting a boiler that will not ignite can flood the combustion chamber with unburnt gas and is not safe.
